Federica Mogherini speaks to Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov

The High Representative of the Union for foreign affairs and security policy Federica Mogherini held today a phone conversation with the Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov on the downing of a Russian jet plane. HR/VP Mogherini conveyed to Minister Lavrov her condolences for the soldier killed yesterday. The HR/VP also underlined the importance to join forces in the fight against Daesh and to coordinate the efforts. Mogherini and Lavrov agreed on the need to safeguard the diplomatic track for the Syrian crisis opened in Vienna, and to proceed with the agreed timeline decided at the last meeting of the International Syria Support Group, that would constitute the most effective basis for effectively defeating Daesh on the ground. They agreed to meet next week in Belgrade, in the margins of the OSCE ministerial council...

Difficult days, but there is no alternative to the Vienna process

We live tough days, both in Europe and in the other countries of our region. Terror has struck again in Tunis, while in Brussels the alert is still at the highest level, after days of extraordinary measures. Meanwhile, a Russian jet was downed on the Turkish-Syrian border for having entered the Turkish airspace. The priority in these hours is to preserve the difficult and demanding process we initiated in Vienna to end the Syrian war. That is the most effective way to defeat Daesh, as we all know: starting a political transition in Syria and joining forces against terrorists who kill innocent people in Syria as well as in Europe. This is what I discussed with the Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, and with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg: we must avoid any further escalation, concentrate and join our efforts against Daesh, move forward the political process we launched in Vienna. And unite the whole international community in this...
