I have been in Berlin today for the SPD annual conference, together with the French Prime Minister Manuel Valls, the Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann, the Swedish Prime Ministre Stefan Löfven, the Deputy Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel, my friend Frank-Walter Steinmeier, and Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament. And together with so many friends I grew up with in the European and in the International Socialist Youth, from the 1990s to date.
It was a way to gather thoughts and projects to leave behind one of the toughest moments in our Union’s history. We can build on sixty years of peace, but we must also find a way to somehow “reinvent” Europe. as Helmut Schmidt said in his last SPD conference, just a few years ago, it is only through our Union that each Member State will find their new place in the world.
