Stress the importance of the past in Berlin and Riga

On the HR/VP’s agenda this week were visits to Germany and Latvia. One of the highlights was HR/VP Federica Mogherini’s visit to Berlin, which marked 25 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall. “Unity and managing complexity all together is our biggest resource and opportunity as EU,” she said, referring to a stark difference of Europe today and in the era when the Berlin Wall was still in place.

Speaking at the 4th Berlin Policy Forum of the Körber Stiftung, HR/VP Mogherini admitted that the challenges she is facing at the start of her mandate are huge, but that by building on the wisdom and vision of all 28 EU member states, in 5 years’ time, when her mandate ends, we will all be in a better position than the one we are in now.

HR/VP Mogherini also visited Latvia, where she had a tour in the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia to have a glimpse of decades of occupation. Her visit to Latvia is the third visit to an EU Member State since the beginning of her mandate and comes at an important time shortly before Latvia’s EU presidency in January 2015.
