The highlights of Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the EC this week, were addressing the European Parliament in Strasbourg and participating in the 4th Euro-African Ministerial Conference on Migration and Development within Rabat Process’ and Ministerial Meeting of the Khartoum Process.

During her opening statement at the EP, Mogherini stressed the urgent need to move forward with finding a negotiated solution to the Israeli – Palestinian conflict on the basis of two states living side by side in peace and security. “The lack of political perspective is at the same time a consequence, a result and a cause of violence,” she said. Mogherini expressed the readiness of the European Union to play a role in the efforts to find a solution. “We are the first trade partner for Israel and the first donor for the Palestinian Authority; we can be the first political player in the region”. At the EP she also made a statement on the 25th anniversary of the UN convention on the Rights of the Child.

This Thursday, Mogherini discussed East and West Migration routes at the 4th Euro-African Ministerial Conference on Migration and Developmentwithin Rabat Process’ framework in Rome. “We need to tackle migration both from the angle of security and management of borders, but also from the angle of cooperation with countries of origin and transit. We need to integrate better our vision, information, and actions,” she said during the press conference signalling a positive start for EU-wide policy on migration.

Today Mogherini opened the first Ministerial Meeting of the Khartoum Process, a political dialogue between the EU, the countries of the Horn of Africa, and transit countries of illegal migration, to discuss human trafficking and people smuggling in this region. The conference launches the EU-Horn of Africa Migration Route initiative and aims to adopt a Political Declaration which will provide a political framework for the coming years. The Khartoum Process will also implement concrete projects and programmes according to jointly determined priority areas of cooperation in the area of migration.
