We have not forgotten Afghanistan. First day here in New York for the United National 70th General Assembly. One of my first meetings here was the “Trilateral” on Afghanistan, co-chaired by the US, China and Afghanistan itself.
The conflict in Afghanistan has lasted way too long. With the help of the international community, though, Afghanistan can stand on its feet again. Our shared objective is still the same as a few years ago: we aim at Afghanistan’s self-reliance. But the path towards self-reliance is one we must walk together. Everyone will have to play their part, and accept their own responsibilities.
We need a new covenant inside the Afghan society. We need a new covenant in region, with a shared commitment to Afghanistan’s stability. And we need a new covenant between Afghanistan and the whole international community. Europe will be part of in this effort. And the international conference the EU will co-host in Brussels can be the place where this threefold new covenant will see the light.
